Play with Intentionality

Be Intentional on the Pickleball Court

In pickleball, every shot matters. Whether you’re warming up, engaging in a casual game, or competing in a high-stakes match, playing with intent is the key to success. Here’s how to incorporate intention into every aspect of your game and elevate your performance.

Warm-Ups Are Your First Opportunity for Intent

Warm-ups are not just a chance to loosen up; they’re an opportunity to assess your opponent’s skill level. Pay attention to their tendencies. Are their dinks consistent? Do they struggle with backhands or footwork? Are they popping balls up, leaving them attackable, or keeping their shots low and unattackable? Use this time to gather insights that can guide your strategy once the game begins.

Every Shot Should Lead to the Next

In pickleball, one shot sets up the next, and intentionality in your sequence of shots is crucial. For example, a deep, well-placed serve can make your opponent’s return more predictable, giving your team the opportunity to execute an effective third shot. Similarly, a deep return can keep your opponents back, preventing them from quickly taking control of the kitchen. Always think of how one shot flows into the next, building a point-winning strategy.

The Third Shot: A Critical Decision Point

The third shot is often the first pivotal moment in any rally. If your opponents stay back after returning your serve, your decision is simple: hit to the back person. If you’re driving your third shot, use it to set up a softer, easier drop shot for your fifth shot. Resist the urge to bang multiple hard drives in a row. Instead, think strategically and focus on creating opportunities that will allow you and your partner to advance to the kitchen line.

Control the Kitchen, Control the Game

Controlling the kitchen is the ultimate goal in pickleball. Assuming equal skill levels among all players, the team that controls the kitchen line with both players present will win most of the points. When a team has both players at the kitchen while the opponents have only one or no players at the kitchen, the team with both players present will win approximately 70% of the points. Patience and placement are your greatest allies. It might take two, three, or even four shots to create the perfect setup for a winning shot. Think of pickleball as a game of chess rather than checkers—it’s about strategy, not just speed and power.

The Takeaway

By playing with intention, you’ll improve your consistency, strategy, and ability to win points. From warm-ups to the final rally, focus on making every shot purposeful. Approach the game with patience and placement in mind, and watch your results soar. Remember, pickleball isn’t just about reacting; it’s about planning and executing with precision.
