Beginning Pickleball: The Golden Rules to Elevate Your Game
Embarking on
my pickleball journey, I quickly realized that amidst the exciting rallies and
strategic plays, there are two fundamental principles that easily determines which players or team has the advantage. These principles, which I affectionately refer to as the Golden Rules
of Pickleball, are not mere guidelines but the cornerstone of success in this fast-growing sport.
The first
rule, "serve and stay back," is for the serving team. It emphasizes
the importance of maintaining position at the baseline after serving, allowing
ample time to react to the opponent's return while avoiding the common pitfall
of rushing forward prematurely. It also ensures that the serving team follows
and doesn't violate the "two bounce rule" which prevents a volley
before two bounces of the pickleball takes place. Conversely, the second rule, "return and
rush," guides the returning team to swiftly advance to the non-volley zone
line after returning the serve, seizing control of the kitchen and dictating
the pace of the game.
In my
experience, countless beginners violate these golden rules by either charging
forward recklessly after serving or by staying at the baseline following a
return of serve. The adherence to these two sayings should be ingrained in
every player's psyche, which not only fosters a basic understanding of the game
but also amplifies the enjoyment derived from it.
The
significance of controlling the kitchen cannot be overstated. When both players
of a team position themselves at the non-volley zone line, their likelihood of
winning rallies skyrockets to approximately 70%. This statistic underscores the
pivotal role of strategic positioning in dictating the outcome of each rally.
Beginners
often receive lots of information about rules, strategy and how to play the
game and unfortunately, not all of it is good so discernment becomes paramount.
While certified coaches undoubtedly offer valuable insights, wisdom can also be
gleaned from seasoned players with a proven track record. Nonetheless, it's
imperative to scrutinize the source of advice, ensuring it aligns with correct
strategies conducive to enhancing one's game.
Almost everyone who’s played the game with some regularity will be
better than a beginner, however it does not mean that their advice is
necessarily right.
Navigating
the nuances of when to approach the non-volley zone line swiftly or gradually
can be perplexing for many players. A simple yet effective guideline is to
synchronize movements with your partner, maintaining coordinated movements at
the same horizontal level, and capitalizing on synergistic teamwork.
For the
returning team, adopting a strategic stance at the non-volley zone line by the
non-returning partner, while the other partner executes the return, is not
merely a rule but a basic strategy. By strategically positioning oneself,
players can anticipate and capitalize on opportunities, setting the stage for a
seamless transition from defense to offense.
In essence,
mastering the basics of pickleball goes beyond just hitting the ball over the
net; it demands adhering to a simple strategy and consistent discipline. By mastering
the Golden Rule of Pickleball and harnessing the power of strategic
positioning, even beginning players can elevate their game quickly,
transforming every game into a more enjoyable experience for all.
