What is the Ready Position and Why Is It Important in Pickleball?

For players just beginning their pickleball journey, one of the foundational elements to master is the ready position. It’s a term you’ll hear frequently, and for good reason. The ready position is the stance and posture players need to take in anticipation of striking the ball. It prepares you to react quickly to whatever happens next on the court, making it one of the most crucial elements in developing solid pickleball skills.

What is the Ready Position?

The ready position in pickleball is a neutral, balanced stance that allows players to respond rapidly to different shots. Here’s a breakdown of the key elements of this stance:

  1. Feet Positioning: Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, with knees slightly bent. Weight should be on the balls of your feet, not the heels, to help you move quickly in any direction.
  2. Body Posture: Lean slightly forward at the waist, keeping your body low and centered. This athletic stance gives you balance and stability, making it easier to move laterally or forward.
  3. Paddle Position: Hold your paddle with one hand in front of your chest, at a slight angle. If you’re right-handed, keep the paddle at the 11 o’clock position; if you’re left-handed, hold it at the 1 o’clock position. This paddle positioning allows you to quickly transition between forehand and backhand shots, however it slightly favors your backhand.
  4. Head and Eye Focus: Your head should be up, with your eyes focused on the ball. Being mentally alert helps anticipate where the ball will go next.

Why Is the Ready Position Important?

  1. Quick Reaction Time: In pickleball, things can happen fast! The ready position allows you to move in any direction—forward, backward, or sideways—giving you a split-second advantage to reach the ball.
  2. Defensive and Offensive Flexibility: Whether you’re defending against a hard smash or preparing for a dink, the ready position prepares you to respond efficiently. You can quickly shift between offensive and defensive strategies without losing balance or control.
  3. Better Control: Proper posture and paddle positioning contribute to better control of your shots. When your paddle is already up and in position, you’re less likely to be caught off-guard, and you’ll be able to place the ball with greater accuracy.
  4. Consistency: Consistently returning to the ready position between shots keeps you engaged and prepared. It’s easy to let your guard down between rallies, but staying in the ready position ensures you are always prepared for the next play.

Conclusion

For beginners and all level of players, mastering the ready position is key to building solid fundamentals in pickleball. It’s not just about being physically ready, but mentally prepared as well. Once you establish this habit, you’ll notice improvements in your reaction time, control, and overall game performance.
